It's Okay to Read Easy Books! After carefully digesting Buddy Reading and having implemented the program for four years, I truly believe that the suggestions and techniques that the authors had to offer helped to develop fluency, intonation, critical thinking, and a love for reading! There are many articles on the benefits of buddy reading and this book offers an excellent guide on how to successfully implement one. There are lessons for the teacher of older buddies as well as lessons for the teacher of the younger buddies. I highly recommend this book!

The audio version is faithful to the book and very well readThis is the first in the Toby Peters books and it is excellent. And, the Blackstone Audio Books version is both well read and faithful to the original book. The breaks on the cassettes are handy. Do yourself a favor and check out the later titles Blackstone offers. You'll be glad.

This is one seriously good bookBecause I loved this book so much, I already gave it to a friend, who then bought it for a friend of hers. thus, I'm not going to spend time telling you what it's about. The Booklist review above can do that.
This is the kind of novel that you will truly read in two days. The writing is exciting and quick, the characters interesting and weird and true, and the plot, point-of-view shifts, and dialogue all first rate.
You will not be disappointed by this read in the least.

Buried Treasures of California: Legends from California's Mountains, Deserts, Beaches, and Cities
Published in Paperback by August House Pub (May, 1995)
Average review score:

You Can't Put it DownI started reading this book and could not put it down. Perhaps for me this book was something very special that it may not be to all. I travel the hills of California on a regular basis, in search of treasure, or just the opportunity to pretend that I am that forty-niner in 1877 digging around in a cold, dark, creaking mine. There is something incredibly relaxing about stepping back in time and exploring a miner's stomping ground. Well if lost treasure intrigues you, and you love short stories, than buy this book. You will not be unhappy!

The Burning of Monterey : The 1818 Attack on California by the Privateer Bouchard
Published in Paperback by CYRIL Books (20 July, 2001)
Average review score:

Gripping, Exciting History of Alta MontereyThis is a thoroughly absorbing and interesting history of the travels and travails of a swashbuckling privateer (some say pirate) who attacked the port of Monterey by sea during the days when the latter was the capitol of Spanish Alta California.
Written in sparse prose and maticulously researched, it is nevertheless very readable, letting the excitment of the events themselves capture the reader's interest.

Bus Stops and other poems

Vélez recreates the authentic border barrio with this bookFrom Zopilote Magazine Vol. 3 No. 2 Bus Stops and Other Poems Manuel J. Vélez Calaca Press by Rosa Pinedo Manuel J. Vélez is a poet in the Chicano tradition, yet goes beyond and uncovers the deep humanity of the borderland soul. His love and cariño for his frontera culture is imbued throughout his poetry. This is a collection of poems that illustrates the mestizaje of the border culture with its study of a variety of individuals. Individuals with which we can identify as part of our ambiente and ourselves. This collection includes images and sounds of barrio culture, the migra experience, field work, our viejitos and viejitas, the veterano, the language barrier Chicanos frequently experience, and Vietnam, among others. The title of the book BUS STOPS AND OTHER POEMS refers to the six different poems throughout the collection titled "Bus Stop." These short character studies are reflective, invoking emotion through the strong images depicted in few words. Vélez's characters are not idealized representations that we often see in the works of young poets, but a study of complex human beings. Especially touching is "Conversations with Lupe." The poem captures the deep devotion that Latinas/os have for the Virgen de Guadalupe, a commonality we share a a Raza. In this poem ddivided into six sections, Vélez portrays a widow's conversations with the Vigen de Guadalupe. Interspersed between her conversations are verses about the Virgen's perspective. These struggles and prayers are cleverly sprinkled with humor. Vélez skillfully attains a balance between the serious nature of our struggles and our ability to laugh at ourselves. Manuel J. Vélez is a talented new poet in the traditional genre of Chicano poetry. His characters go beyond the archetypes constructed in our literary tradition. Vélez veritably recreates the authentic border barrio with this wonderful collection of verse.

Cafe Society: Photographs and Poetry from San Francisco's North Beach
Published in Paperback by Hippocrene Books (November, 1978)
Average review score:

Beatitude at it's bestI lived in North Beach on and off during the late 1950s thru 70s.
Ira's book of remarkable photos shows the tale end of the "Beat movement" before things changed for the worse. There are some excellent photos of Ginsberg & Ferlinghetti, along with several other poets and writers. I was known as the "Krazy (auto) Painter from Oakland." I missed out ("Sfiga") on most of the photo shoots. . .but remember most of the people in the book, who were very real. The quality of Ira's work and the text is for one to follow.
